on writing. again.

"Writing is my original way of understanding the world." Shauna Niequist, For The Love Podcast

like the rest of the world (or a bit behind the times) I've recently started listening to several podcasts, including Jen Hatmaker's new one called For The Love... (because #teamhatmaker) and her first interview was with Shauna Niequist, author of Bread and Wine,  Bittersweet  & Savor.  I actually haven't read any of those books, but I own two of them and liked the bits and pieces I've read in the last few years.  I really loved her interview because it focused on hospitality which is one of my goals for this year, but it was this quick mention about the nature of writing in her life that struck a chord with me.  I essentially stopped writing a few years ago.  Blame it on busyness, blame it on writing for school instead of for myself, blame it on a lost voice or a discouraged heart, but the truth of the matter is that when I stopped writing, my mind got fuzzy.

Shauna told me why.

One of my favorite things to do is to go back and read what I've written over the years.  There have been several corners of the internet to find my writing and I've written for a couple of different audiences, but over time, I lost out on the reason I love writing to begin with- it helps me understand the world. So I'm going to try to do it again.  With a new corner of the internet and no real desire to grow an audience or make money or get to the point where I can sell gummy vitamins on instagram- I'm writing again in an attempt to make a little more sense of a confusing world, and document the process for my future self to appreciate.  So, aside from an initial post to alert people that this exists, I don't anticipate promoting this avenue of my writing, because there's a shift in my voice when I think I want people to read it.  If you read something you want to talk to me about, feel free to email me, or text me or bring it up in conversation- it's not that I'm not willing to talk about it or share it with the world, but my hope is that by doing the writing for myself.

But I know that sometimes reading what other people write about the world helps me process too.  And I've been pleasantly surprised in the ways that my own writing has connected with other people in the past, so I wanted to make it available to people if they want it. Or if they work nights and need something to help them stay awake in the 5 o'clock hour.

here's to getting back to my roots.

(see the about me page if you're looking for my former corners of the internet, or some of the writing of others that have left an imprint on my heart and mind the last few years)
